Poverty in America

Action: Human Right to Water

Published September 09, 2009 @ 10:31AM PT

UPDATE, 9/9/09, 8pm EDT: The Senate passed the bill today!

Courtesy of Change.org member Meredith I see that the California Senate will be considering a pathbreaking bill that ensures every Californian has the human right to "clean, affordable and accessible water." Through grassroots efforts, the bill has gained bipartisan support and passed the House.  If the Senate passes it tomorrow, as is expected, Governor Schwarzenegger has until October 11 to sign the bill into law.

File this under Environmental Justice, the anti-poverty movement that fights for a clean, safe and accessible environment for the poor, who are disproportionately subject to the harmful effects of pollution, toxic facilities sited in their neighborhoods, lack of open space, and lack of healthy food - including water.  More than 60 organizations across California have come together in support of the bill, which will improve access to clean, affordable water for more than 11M Californians, most of them poor.

If you live in California, tell Gov. Schwarzenegger to pass AB1242, the Human Right to Water Bill.  Please spread the word!

I can't believe that this bill is not getting more attention. This could be the bill that tips the balance in favor of a guaranteed human right to water for all Americans.

Why isn't it being shouted from the hilltops?!

We need everyone in California to tell the governor, Terminate Thirst! Sign AB1242 - the Human Right to Water Bill!

The Human Right to Water Bill is historic.  The first such bill to be brought before any state in the US.  It has great potential to have an affect on the lives of people in California and beyond.
