Pledge to Serve America

Take the pledge:

In January, I invited you to participate in a National Day of Service -- an opportunity for all Americans to join the needed effort to renew our country -- and the response was amazing.

Service, of course, isn't a once-a-year event. It's a fundamental American ideal -- citizens offering a helping hand to our neighbors and our country.

Yesterday, my Senate colleagues in Washington passed the Serve America Act, and it will soon be signed into law by President Obama. It's the largest expansion of national and community service since the creation of the Peace Corps in the 1960s.

I hope you'll take this opportunity now to renew your own commitment to service. To do so, please sign our "Pledge to Serve America":

The Serve America Act will enable hundreds of thousands more Americans to serve their country, especially in specific areas of need:

Improving our schools; Supporting energy efficiency and "green" energy; Preserving our magnificent environmental heritage; Bringing quality health care to low-income communities; Expanding job opportunities for low-income Americans; and Preparing for disasters and other emergencies, and responding to them as they happen.

The Serve America Act will also provide greater opportunities for young Americans in low income communities to participate in service, and it will increase service opportunities for senior citizens to use their experience to serve our country.

And it creates a Volunteer Generation Fund to assist nonprofit organizations throughout the country recruit and train more volunteers.

As Senator Barbara Mikulski said last week, "This bill is not about programs, it's about American values -- the spirit of volunteerism and neighbor helping neighbor."

I hope very much that you'll do your part. Please join today in our "Pledge to Serve America":

With all good wishes, we thank you for being part of an exciting new generation of national and community service. The best of America is still to come!

Sincerely,

Senator Edward M. Kennedy
